New Work
1001 Dreams
1001 Dreams 20" x 60"
1001 Dreams is what I call an abstract Spacescape. I love astrophysics
and after reading about Jupiter and its mysteries I found myself
painting this piece. I began with a completely different idea, but the
painting had its own message to convey and it led me to this beautiful
dreamlike place. One person commented that it looks like where the
water meets the desert, and another said it was like where Heaven meets
Earth. What do you see?

The image above shows the first layers of 1001 Dreams. The tool I made
to move my paint is also shown. The first layers of the painting are
fast, fluid and spontaneous. This seemingly intuitive process is based
on decades of exploration and experimentation of how paint moves; nerdy
but fun.

Where do you find inspiration?

Travel is difficult now but I find being in nature is my most important
tool to inspire my next creative project. Civilizations and cultures
that have cared for the lands we walk on today inspire my Spacescapes
paintings. I began my artistic studies at age 6 as an oil landscape
painter under the tutelage of my great aunt Santa Duran. She would take
me out to various locations to paint. Over the years, my artwork and
style evolved and changed but I still maintained the connection with
the land and the ancient stories. This archaeological site was
originally built for observing the stars and honoring the cycles of the
Earth. I can still sense the power that this view commands. Chimney
Rock in Colorado.
