Listen to the Whispers of Your Soul

Are you listening to the whispers of your soul? Do you remember how? Maybe you are wondering what the heck I am talking about. When the busy-ness of life creates an internal buzz with your to-do lists, and the needs of others and drowns out your muse, then you can’t hear the small whispers. The only internal voice you hear may be the constant critic. Why aren’t you making art? And when you do, the critic isn’t giving you the support you need. First take a moment to just stop. You cannot juggle one more thing until you really know what you want to do. You may wonder where to begin, how to start and what it is you really wish to do.

I call it following the breadcrumbs, paying attention to the nudges, or listening to the whispers. You may already be doing this; you just call it something different. Do you consider yourself intuitive? Do you think of someone and then they call, or you run into them? Do you go into a bookstore or a library and a book falls off the shelf into your hand? I have had this happen to me, but the book fell on my foot. It was a life transforming read and one of my favorites to date. Do you have a hunch to go to a gathering and you meet someone that changes your life? Do you follow the nudges to open the door?

The most important question you can ask yourself is, Is the Universe a friendly place or not? If you think it is out to get you, your whispers may tell you to beware. If you trust that the Universe is conspiring to support you, then your nudges and whispers will be welcome guidance. Where are you led? What do you see when you get there? Pay attention. Is there an email from a workshop you have always wanted to take? Follow the lead. Are you suddenly inspired to paint something different? You know the cookie tracking; you do a search for something and then all of a sudden you are seeing ads everywhere. It is a bit creepy, but when you do the same thing internally it is a guidance system.

Take an intuitive week-long trip. You don’t even need to go out of town to do it. Let your choices be fresh rather than routine. Take your coffee in a different place or change up your morning routine. Try writing some morning pages in your journal before checking your phone notifications. Set your intention to listen to your spirit guide and follow your first thoughts. Travel a different route to work or the store. When you change your routine, your mind must pay attention. You will notice things that you have walked by a million times. See if you can hear those little whispers that are saying, maybe you should take that class. Notice patterns. Walk down a different path in order to change those patterns. Next year will come along and you will be another year older whether you take the class or the trip. Take the chance and follow the breadcrumbs.

Thirty years ago, I began following the breadcrumbs without being aware that’s what I was doing. I wanted to take a class in computers at the community college. It had been over a decade since I had dropped out of college so when the course description said I needed math and English prerequisites I signed up for those classes first. I didn’t realize at the time that they just wanted to be sure students were proficient in English and could do basic math. I was in Algebra 1 and my teacher encouraged me to move up to the next level because I had math previously. Another woman my age was in the same situation. We decided that it was helpful to begin with an easy class, so we stayed. It was a good boost for both of us. I made one of my best friends in the English class I signed up for and we still get together today. One class led to another, and I discovered I really enjoyed college again. The intro computer class led me to completing my college degrees 5 years later.

I have always listened to my intuition and known that the Universe had my back. This belief helped me to take chances and follow those whispers. Pay attention to the synchronicities. I was thinking about a certain painting yesterday, a portrait. I didn’t get around to googling it but last night as I was scrolling through my feed, there it was. Pay attention to these little synchronicities. The more you look for them the more you will see. These little nudges will train you to find and follow the breadcrumbs that may change your life. Take the course, take a risk, you are so worth it. Let your critic go on a different path and follow the breadcrumbs to the next adventure.

Nancy Reyner and you, Sandra, have been inspiring my artistic creations for a long time. Both of you from Santa Fe, and I finally go to visit there in 2013 when life was more interesting than Covid-19. Intuition, heart-felt emotions and an emerging explosion of art has guided me all of my life. Journalism kept me practical and tied to a different world. Art freed me from social, cultural, religious and boundaries deep in my psyche. Thank you!

Sandra, have read this beautiful piece over and over....comes at a time i sorely needed to hear it...thank-you for your insights!
