The best wisdom is to embrace your stumbles and failures. It is what I have come to live by, but it took a lot of getting back up again to really understand this wisdom. I have journeyed from one identity to the next and followed the breadcrumbs to where I am today. I used to have anxieties about what I was doing, who I was and where I was going, but I have always known I was an explorer. When I was young, I wasn’t so concerned with making money, having security or even knowing what I would be doing next. I was a curiosity seeker, an explorer and sometimes a pirate...but that is another tale.

I wanted to experience as much as I could because I didn’t think I would be around long. I recall when I turned 25, I was amazed that I was still alive. I would joke that I had an army of guardian angels looking after me. My adventures began at a very young age. When I was 4 years old, I climbed onto the back of Old Blue, a large Appaloosa that belonged to the rancher next door. As soon as I was on his back he started for home. My mom saw me riding off into the distance, so she got in the car and drove over to retrieve me. I remember us kids were kind of afraid of this neighbor because he never smiled and was always gruff when we came around, but it changed that day. When I rode into the yard on the back of Old Blue he was out on the porch with my mom, and I will always remember the smile on his face and the shake of his head. He was okay after all and I grinned back.

I was always adventurous and sometimes reckless. By thirty something I was an addict and my life wasn’t going in a direction I liked. With the help of a lot of people, I turned my life around and I have been in recovery for 30 years. This journey has taken me places I never imaged possible. I have been led to connect with creatives all around the world. Art and creating is my divine path. When I am in the process of looking, discovering, creating and teaching I am walking in the divine because I am in the process. I am connected to the present moment and really that is all we have. I let go of the past and the future is still to come. I have the eternal now.

I wrote Awakening Your Creative Soul as a way to connect with others that may be struggling or looking for a path. I share my spirituality of creating, healing, recovery and connections so that it may inspire even one other person to save their life. I wrote in the book that the journey is about waking up to your curiosity. You may be just starting on this art making journey or maybe you have been following breadcrumbs for some time but are still searching. You never know what thing or process may crack open that shell that holds your inspiration. It is in the doing, making, sharing, searching, falling, getting up and trying all over again that fills your life with purpose. The more you let go, the more you have. Trust your choices and you don’t need to know your big purpose, your purpose knows you, it is in your soul. Begin with a simple project that provides joy and creative direction and then move on to the next and the next, following the breadcrumbs into your meaning and joy.

I equate the journey around the sun with the seasons and the directions. The lessons of the directions I have learned from several shamans I have studied with over the years. They were from South America, Mexico and local Native Americans. I learned plants and healing from my earliest days. My life of living on the land taught me how to observe and be in nature. I discovered my spirituality high on the mountains, deep in the forest and swimming under the water. My journey was directed by my curiosity, beginning with the question, “why is the sky blue”. I still seek explanations, not just answers.

If you are curious and seeking a new way of exploring and discovering your creativity, I invite you to join me in the journey around the sun. Step into the unknown, answer the yearning call of your soul. Step into the mystery and magic of art. I invite you to join me in following your passion. Open your eyes to the beauty and wonder of your soul.

Sandra, You are one of the most talented artists I know as you have a strong blend of your left brain that does the research and know your materials so well. And your right brain shows up so magnificently in your artwork. As I teacher I found you to be wonderful. Your online programs are the best I have come by. Your instruction is thorough and your comments are sincere. I can't wait to work with you in person! And of course, we share the mutual love for horses-- and the long haul of dedication to our work-- without instant recognition. I hope more and more people find you!

Kathy thank you for your words. I also look forward to creating together. Perhaps in the Spring in Santa Fe. Sandra
